examining our complexities as African Americans in a world with layers of cultures, rites, adversity, hip hop and the language of our ancestors always speaking. There’s always a movement in Art. Artists are always redefining themselves and art. That’s part of life and it always comes in different perspectives. During the impressionist period artist were redefining themselves. During the Abstract Expressionist period artist were redefining themselves. As with each new movement, surrealism, romanticism, it was a defining moment when the old ideology of what was supposed to be no longer applied to certain artist. In the 21st century artists are still re-defining themselves.

When you visit Galleries and Museums make sure you take the time to consider how you’re looking at the work and not comparing it to the definitions of what works are supposed to be. Let’s enjoy these works and continue to celebrate the new vanguard of artist that will be the new masters of contemporary art. Artists must have these movements in art, because life never stands still.

“We strive to pile beauty on beauty, and magnificence on glory.
