Eric W. Stephenson is a fifth-generation sculptor whose mastery of metal carves out a unique language of movement and expression. His work breathes life into steel, aluminum, iron, and bronze, often incorporating elements of glass and ceramics. From intimate miniatures to monumental public installations, each sculpture invites a moment of connection that transcends the physical.
Born into a lineage steeped in the arts, Stephenson’s early years were marked by struggles with dyslexia and stuttering, which fueled his passion for visual language. Under the guidance of his sculptor father, he found his voice in spatial relationships, crafting an artistic path that marries intuition with rigorous craft. His dedication to his craft was honed through countless hours in the studio, driven by a desire to push the boundaries of metalwork.
Stephenson earned his BFA from Pennsylvania State University and his MFA from the University of Houston. He has taught at institutions like Rhode Island College and the School at the Art Institute of Chicago and has assisted acclaimed sculptor Richard Hunt for over two decades.
His work has been showcased at SCOPE Art Fair during Art Basel Miami and New York City, Elmhurst Museum, N'namdi Gallery, and the Frederick Meijer Sculpture Garden. Stephenson is based in Chicago, where he runs Lunar burn Studio, blending technology with traditional craftsmanship. A recent exhibition Krasl Art Center in St Joseph, MI is a mini retrospective of Stephenson’s work and unveiled his latest large sculpture "Emerging Hybrid" that reveals his innovating workflow, merging current technologies with his traditional practice.
